What Is a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)?

A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your traditional IRA to an eligible charitable organization. Instead of withdrawing money, paying income tax, and then donating it, the transfer goes straight to the charity and can exclude the donated amount from your taxable income.

Key Eligibility Rules

Age requirement

You must be 70½ or older at the time of the donation.

IRA type

Applies to traditional IRAs (and some inherited IRAs). It generally does not apply to employer plans like 401(k)s unless rolled into an IRA first.

Annual limit

Up to $100,000 per individual per year can be donated via QCDs

Charity Requirement

The recipient must be a qualified 501(c)(3) public charity. Donor- advised funds and private foundations are not eligible

Tax Benefits

The amount donated is not counted as taxable income, which can reduce your overall tax bill.
Once you reach RMD age (currently 73 for many retirees), a QCD can count toward your annual RMD
Lowering your adjusted gross income (AGI) can help reduce taxes on Social Security benefits or Medicare surcharge thresholds
You receive tax benefits even if you take the standard deduction — unlike regular charitable contributions

Steps to Make a QCD

Request a QCD distribution form or process
Ensure the check or transfer is made payable directly to the charity (not to you)
Confirm the charity qualifies under IRS rules
Get a written receipt from the charity confirming no goods or services were received in return
Report the distribution on your tax return, noting that it is a QCD

Coordinate with your tax advisor: Individual circumstances vary, consult a qualified tax professional or financial advisor to determine how these rules apply to your specific situation.
